Ktunaxa Land Stewardship Visioning

Land Stewardship Visioning
For many years, we have been considering how a territory-wide approach to stewardship might benefit our Nation—a vision for how we want ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa to be looked after, now and into the future. Land Stewardship Visioning
For many years, we have been considering how a territory-wide approach to stewardship might benefit our Nation—a vision for how we want ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa to be looked after, now and into the future. A clear Land Stewardship Vision for ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa would allow us to make a shift, from reacting to individual development proposals for specific areas, to being proactive in deciding how we would like the land and waters across ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa to be conserved, restored or used for development in a respectful way.
A clear Land Stewardship Vision for ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa will also enable us to engage with greater confidence in joint stewardship planning with BC for parts of our homeland.
A Land Stewardship Vision needs to be developed with citizen engagement and in close collaboration with Ktunaxa First Nation’s staff. The creation of the Ktunaxa Land Stewardship Vision will be an important step in helping our Nations have more say in decisions about our lands and resources, and enable us to balance conservation, restoration and responsible use for the benefit of current and future generations.

Ktunaxa Elders Gathering Dinner in Vancouver
Guidance provided by Ktunaxa ʔaqⱡsmaknik̓ included:
- Members want more frequent updates on the LSV initiative.
- Sharing meeting schedules in advance is important so members can prepare.
- Provide stronger background and context during presentations, especially for members who do not regularly attend meetings.
- Involve Ktunaxa experts in forestry.
- Create opportunities for youth involvement and ensure elders’ voices are included.
- Promote awareness and respect for Ktunaxa rules on lands and waterways.
- Look into the recent Cowichan court case, which reinforces that Crown governments cannot extinguish Indigenous rights and title.
- All information gathered through the LSV must be interpreted by Ktunaxa individuals.
Please read the full article here!
