Ktunaxa Land Stewardship Visioning

Land Stewardship Visioning

For many years, we have been considering how a territory-wide approach to stewardship might benefit our Nation—a vision for how we want ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa to be looked after, now and into the future. A clear Land Stewardship Vision for ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa would allow us to make a shift, from reacting to individual development proposals for specific areas, to being proactive in deciding how we would like the land and waters across ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa to be conserved, restored or used for development in a respectful way.

A clear Land Stewardship Vision for ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa will also enable us to engage with greater confidence in joint stewardship planning with BC for parts of our homeland.

A Land Stewardship Vision needs to be developed with citizen engagement and in close collaboration with Ktunaxa First Nation’s staff. The Land Stewardship Vision will include a map indicating how specific areas need to be conserved, restored or used for development in a respectful way. Those areas have not been identified yet – they will be defined over the coming months based on detailed work with Ktunaxa Leaders, staff, and citizens, and based on many different sources of information, the values identified in previous work and conversations, and through future engagement opportunities.
