The First One

The first Nation AGA that I remember attending was in Tobacco Plains at Edwards Lake. I don’t remember much of the meeting because I spent most of my time swimming. I seem to remember a speaker from the Shuswap, Saul Terry, was in attendance. I don’t remember what he said, probably because I was swimming, but I have this memory of him being there. If I had to guess, he probably spoke about “Land Claims” as that was the big idea of the day. I know back then that I had no clue what was being talked about or why it was even a topic but because of the AGA continuing the following year and then becoming an annual I started to pay attention more and more as the years went on. And now I am being asked to offer opening comments for our AGA and my son is at school. I wonder what the “idea of the day” will be when he becomes a father.

Thank you Nasukin Joe Pierre. Its the same for me, I didn't pay too much attention at the AGM's when they were held but I started to sit in on them later as I got a bit older. These are also our annual Ktunaxa Nation social events and getting together to see one another, from all the seven communities has always been a favourite part of the Annual General Meetings. I don't know when it was changed to be just an Annual General Assembly (A.G.A.).
