Three-day excursion towards the spectacular, the natural and the manmade!
In July 2024, 28 Ktunaxa hopped on a bus (the “Ktunaxa Express”) for a 3-day trip to Yoho and Kootenay National Park, connecting our people with their homelands, strengthening our presence and learning about aquatic ecosystem stewardship.
Along the way, attendees learned stories of cultural resilience within the area, traditional uses of the land and resources, points of cultural significance to Ktunaxa and how we will have presence in the area for generations to come.
While there, attendees took part in several circle discussions surrounding how to improve Ktunaxa presence within the parks, water and aquatic species stewardship, how Ktunaxa and Parks Canada can work to bring greater visibility to Ktunaxa rights and history in the park, and what these parks mean to Ktunaxa.
As one attendee said, “We need to focus not just on what we used to do, but on what we can do moving forward.”
Attendees also took part in canoeing and crafting, shared smiles and laughs, built community and connection on our traditional lands, and had plenty of good food!

Is it acceptable to use Merry in your sentences in the middle of November? It's certainly not December yet and it's quite possibly way too early to be completely in the Christmas spirit. Even so, there's no reason to pass up a good holiday drink, at least that's the idea here at KNC, as this is the second week the holiday stations have been rolled out!

Ktunaxa Shorts bringing you to the 2023 AGA in Tobacco Plains!
The footage seen below was taken over the two day AGA event in Tobacco Plains band hall, covering some of the KNC leadership, Nation leadership and Ktunaxa peoples. Inside the Tobacco Plains band hall gymnasium area is where the panels were held alongside live pow-wow drumming. All of the outside footage is where the KNC and Industry booths were located and let's not forget about the Arts & Crafts tent located outside too.

It's the end of the year for the huckleberries as the season shifts into fall. There may not be time to gather the remaining berries or perhaps just enough time, either way take in the fall scenery in todays video. This footage was taken during last week with an Akisqnuk elder. The Traditional Burn Gathering completed and here's the details of what went down!
What:
On January 25th, Knowledge keepers, Nature Conservancy of Canada, The Nature Trust of B.C., B.C. Wildlife Federation and KNC Land Stewardship gathered to discuss the reintroduction of "Traditional Burns" to the Columbia Lake area.
The occurrence of overgrowth impacting the ecosystem, wildlife and predators in and around the Columbia Lake area was a big talking point, to say the least.
Talks on this day ranged from Invasive weeds, reasons for season specific burning and the impact of holding a burn in one season versus another.
It was quite the jam packed info session to be a part of!
Why:
For some time now, the Columbia Lake East Side area has mostly remained untouched by controlled fire and that has caused the local ecosystem to be grow differently, drastically changing the area from how it was in previous years.
The natural wildlife highways have become dense with overgrowth causing certain foods to become scare, travel becomes longer or more dangerous, ultimately resulting in fewer wildlife occupying areas that used to boom with their numbers.
Introducing Ashley O'Neil and AshFireWear, located in Windermere, British Columbia of the East Kootenay region, ɁamakɁis Ktunaxa.
Ashley O'Neil aka "Smashing Ash," a well-earned nickname due to Ashley "smashing the ash" while wearing a smile on her face in search of remaining embers to put out in wildfires, is a provider of female firefighting clothing, but not limited to her, as Ashley also has a male clothing line available, too.
Having worked as a firefighter and firefighting trainer, Ashley noticed the lack of female protective clothing available and used this opportunity to become a provider.
With an understanding of the standards required to produce firefighting clothing, she grabbed her materials, a needle, some thread and worked the sewing machine and so AshFireWear was born.
What is AshFireWear?
AshFireWear is a business that provides bio-degradable, protective clothing to firefighters and other workers.
The equipment covers the NFP standards of 1977 CGSB 155.22 and NFPA 21 12, (say that about ten times!)
Ashley let us know the shirts, pants and coveralls can be used by "Wildland Firefighters," "Urban Interfacing Firefighters," "Welders," "Miners," "Oil Field Workers," and "Hydro Workers."
